  • 3.56. Providers must take reasonable steps to ensure the safety of children, staff and others on the premises in the case of fire or any other emergency and must have an emergency evacuation procedure. Providers must have appropriate fire detection and control equipment (for example, fire alarms, smoke detectors, fire blankets and/or fire extinguishers) which is in working order. Fire exits must be clearly identifiable, and fire doors must be free of obstruction and easily opened from the inside.

 

Policy Statement

 

We ensure our premises present no risk of fire by ensuring the highest possible

standard of fire precautions. Our fire risk assessment is completed by Citation annually. The person in charge and staff are familiar with the current legal requirements. Where necessary we seek the advice of a competent person, such as our Fire Officer, or Fire Safety Consultant.

 

Procedures

 

  • The basis of fire safety is risk assessment. These are carried out by Citation and shared with us

  • Fire doors are clearly marked, never obstructed and easily opened from the inside.

  • Smoke detectors/alarms and fire-fighting appliances conform to BSEN standards, are fitted in appropriate high risk areas of the building and are checked as specified by the manufacturer.

  • Our emergency evacuation procedures are approved by the Fire Safety Officer and are:

Clearly displayed in the premises

Explained to new members of staff

Practiced regularly at least once every six weeks

 

  • Records are kept of fire drills and the servicing of fire safety equipment.

  • The fire alarm is tested weekly by Miss Caitlin Rice or in her absence are conducted by Miss Amy Rice or Mrs Vicki Jarosz.

 

 

Evacuation Procedures

 

A long continues bell sounds to alert all building users on the premises of a fire.

 

0-3’s Rooms

 

  • Calmly and firmly stop all babies and children playing.

  • Place the non mobile babies in push chairs

  • Direct children to line up at the door.

  • One member of staff is positioned at exit and guides children over.

  • Informs staff in garden area to bring over children.

  • Take a head count, to ensure all present.

  • Staff position themselves in between children one at the front, middle, end and lead the children out.

  • Named staff collects registers, mobile phone and leaves through Fire Exit.

  • Babies/children are led out of the building over to the meeting point at the far right corner of the garden. Or in the event that smoke fills the garden to use the secondary meeting point on the left hand side of the Rainbow stores next door to Rose Buddies Childcare, moving right back away from the road.

  • Register to be taken to ensure all babies, children, staff, volunteers and parents are all present.

  • In the event of a real fire, Nursery Manager/Deputy Manager checks with other building users that they have telephoned 999 and that the building is all clear.

  • Key Persons would in turn telephone parents/carers from Information on tablets to inform them of the incident.

  • When the all clear has been given and it is safe to return to the building, babies/children are once again checked on register.

  • Staff resume session explaining what has happened and why.

  • Named person, writes up the incident in the Fire Drill sheet and highlights in orange on the register and inform parents of the ‘Drill’.

 

3-5 Room

 

  • Calmly and firmly stop children playing.
